Current Local Safety Alert
A confirmed cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) alert has been issued for parts of Sherbrook Valley.
The affected areas include:
- Sherbrook Valley
- The Stepping Stones
- The Pumping Station
- All streams from Punch Bowl through to the Stepping Stones
If you visit the area, please follow all warning signs and local advice.
Please Keep Dogs Away From The Water
Cyanobacteria, often called blue-green algae, can produce toxins that are extremely dangerous to dogs, horses and other animals.
Please do NOT allow dogs, horses or other animals to:
- Drink the water
- Paddle in the water
- Swim in the water
- Retrieve toys from the water
- Walk through affected streams
Why Is It Dangerous?
Even a very small amount of contaminated water can make a dog seriously ill. Dogs may swallow water while drinking, swimming or simply by licking wet fur after leaving the water.
Signs of Possible Poisoning
- Vomiting
- Diarrhoea
- Drooling
- Weakness
- Difficulty walking
- Muscle tremors
- Difficulty breathing
- Collapse
- Seizures
What Should You Do?
If your dog has entered the water or may have swallowed contaminated water:
- Prevent them from licking their fur.
- Rinse them thoroughly with clean water if it is safe to do so.
- Contact your veterinary practice immediately.
- Seek emergency veterinary treatment if your dog becomes unwell.
Our Advice
Until this alert has been lifted, we recommend avoiding these areas completely and choosing alternative walking routes around Penkridge and Staffordshire. There are plenty of beautiful local walks that allow dogs to enjoy the outdoors safely.
