How to Introduce Dogs to Each Other Safely 🐶🐾

Whether you're bringing home a new puppy, arranging a play date, or meeting another dog on a walk, introductions can help create positive experiences. Taking things slowly allows dogs to feel comfortable and confident.

1. Start on Neutral Ground

Whenever possible, introduce dogs in a neutral location such as a quiet park or open space rather than inside either dog's home. This can reduce territorial behaviour and help both dogs relax.

2. Walk Together First

Walking side by side allows dogs to become familiar with each other without pressure. Keeping some distance at first gives them time to adjust and read each other's body language.

3. Watch Their Body Language

Positive signs include relaxed bodies, soft eyes, loose tails and natural curiosity. Stiff posture, staring, growling or avoiding interaction may mean a dog needs more space.

4. Keep First Meetings Short

Short and positive interactions are often better than long meetings. Ending on a calm note helps dogs build confidence over time.

5. Never Force Interaction

Every dog is different. Some dogs become friends quickly, while others need more time. Allow dogs to approach each other naturally and avoid forcing greetings.

6. Reward Calm Behaviour

Praise and reward relaxed behaviour. Positive experiences help dogs associate new friends and new environments with confidence.
